The year 2015. The last generation where magic was still practiced.
Chaldea, an organization was created for the preservation and the continuation of the human race, is dedicated to the protection and survival the history of humanity above all else. A world magic alone cannot see everything, and science alone cannot examine. Chaldea was established to prevent the full and final extinction of the human race.
One day, the future that had been continuously observed in Chaldea disappeared, and was discovered that all of humanity will become extinct in 2017.
The cause of this mass extinction event is believed to have happened in 2004 in a small city in Japan called Fuyuki. In Fuyuki a strange and "unobservable region" that had never existed before appeared. Chaldea assumed this to be the reason and then set out to investigate the cause and stop or destroy it if necessary. The mission Search for the Holy Grail - the Grand Order was then issued.

Ritsuka Fujimaru was invited to Chaldea, an organization that is dedicated to the protection and survival the history of humanity above all else, because of his aptitude as a master.
On his first visit to Chaldea, he meets a quiet girl named Mash Kyrielight.
Ritsuka, unfortunately despite all his talents he does not have an proficiency or background in magic, and is not allowed to go on his first assigned mission. During the mission, however, many protentional masters and staff, including Mash, are involved in a serious accident.
Ritsuka then wakes up to find himself in 2004 in the town of Fuyuki, where the Holy Grail War once took place. In front of him is a girl holding a shield as tall as he is. She is a Servant, and she calls herself Mash Kyrielight.
